Jennifer GodinezElementary ESL Specialist
What is ESL?
ESL is the acronym for English as a Second Language.
It is the process of teaching English to speakers of other languages who live in a country where English is an official or dominant language. Social and academic language skills are taught in addition to the cultural aspects of the English language. ESL instruction and language learning involves listening, speaking, reading & writing with little or no use of the native language.
What does the ESL Specialist do?
I collaborate with others in the school to develop appropriate programs and practices to enable ESL students to attain their full potential. I offer emotional and social support for newly arrived students and assist in prioritizing their needs. I strive to establish a link between school and home, especially during the initial “settling-in” period.
I am also responsible for the testing and placement of the students, obtaining and developing teaching/learning materials appropriate to their needs, and scheduling instruction/support with the classroom teachers.
I supply teachers with appropriate cultural background and other relevant information about ESL students as well as promote cultural awareness and sensitivity amongst staff, students, parents, and the community.
Please feel free to contact me any time and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s education!
