The course introduces the student to the American system of
criminal justice. Its growth and development will be examined with emphasis
placed on the various subsystems of the criminal justice system (substantive
and procedural criminal law; police, prosecution, defense, courts,
institutional and community corrections; and the juvenile justice system).
Additionally, contemporary issues that challenge the functional efficiency and
effectiveness of the criminal justice system will be addressed. Students will
learn the terminology of the field, have the opportunity to evaluate personal
attitudes and values regarding crime and responses to crime.

The theory of investigation, conduct at crime scenes, the
collection, handling and preservation of criminal evidence and other criminal
investigation practices and procedures, discussion of scientific aids and their
uses in investigation; preparation of cases, emphasizing methods and problems
of information and interrogation.

Basic preparation for advanced work in pure and applied
psychology through an acquaintance with the fundamental principles of human
behavior. The nature of psychology, biosocial basis of behavior, individual
differences, dynamics of behavior, personality and mental health will be
examined.

A comparison of major approaches to the study of the
development and structure of normal personality. Topics include the
applications of psychological research to understanding and promoting mental
health and human resilience. Consideration is given to the role of healthy
personality in managing frustration, conflict, adjusting to predictable and
unpredictable life changes, and achieving maximum well-being.
