READING, READING, and more READING ...   In 2nd grade the main focus is on fluency for most of the school year.  (Fluency is how fast a student reads).  The students are tested on their level of fluency throughout the school year. The students get timed for 1 minute in which will determine how many words the students read per minute and the number of errors is also recorded.  The kids have been taking these types of fluency tests since kindergarten so they are use to it. Due to the fact that our 2nd grade goal is fluency please be sure to practice reading every night even if it is only for a few minutes.  As with anything else, if you do not practice the skill it takes a student longer and longer to obtain their goal.  Reading is extremely important because the students are becoming more independent and will be taking tests independently.     Chapter books are also very important starting in 2nd grade.  A few series are listed below and usually are a big hit with 2nd graders.   Magic Tree House Series Horrible Harry Series Cam Jansen Series My Weird School Series Junie B.
