    Jump Rope for Heart at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary!

    The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease (our nation’s number one killer) and stroke (fifth leading cause of death in the US).   Jump Rope for Heart is a community service learning program of the American Heart Association that teaches students:

    • the importance of developing heart-healthy habits;

    • that being physically active can be fun;

    • that raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community and across the country.

    It is important to partner with the American Heart Association because our children are developing significant health issues that can shorten their life expectancy:

    Ø  Almost a third of U.S.. children and adolescents ages 2-19 are overweight or obese.

    Ø  Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before age 55.

    Ø  Sixty-one percent of children ages 9-13 aren’t physically active outside of school.

    Ø  On average, American children and adolescents spend nearly four hours watching television every day.

    Lower Pottsgrove participates in a Jump Rope for Heart event each school year.  Mrs. Cies and Mrs. Vishio work together on the event.  Mrs. Vishio kicks off the event in Health class by explaining the event and the benefits of a healthy heart.  The students participate in the actual jump roping during Physical Education class with Mrs. Cies.  This year, Lower raised more than it has ever raised for the American Heart Association.  Our school goal was set at $4000 but we went above and beyond and raised $6500.00.  Our three top fundraisers were all from one class (Ms. Bainbridge’s fourth grade class):

    Ava R. -- $550.00

    Mikayla P. -- $545.00

    Spencer B. -- $390.00

    Way to go Lower!
    Great Job!
