The goal of the Pottsgrove School District school counseling program, which is in accordance with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards, is to promote and enhance student development in the areas of academics, career, and personal/social skills. Educators, families, community agencies, and post‐ secondary institutions will assist the school counseling program in the promotion of, and advocacy for, equity and access to learning for all students.
Stakeholders
Students
The students of Pottsgrove School District will receive curriculum, which is focused on academic, career, and personal/social skill development. The curriculum will be delivered through classroom lessons, group counseling, individual counseling, programming, and linkage to community resources. Students will benefit from the counselors’ individualization of planning for each student’s needs and interests. Students will assist in the delivery of the school counseling program through their positions as peer tutors to enhance academic success, and as peer helpers during times of transition. Students also may participate in community service projects. Students will serve as role models for one another as they develop the skills delivered through the counseling program.
Educators
Teachers, staff, and administrators will be informed of the school counseling department mission statement, goals, and standards. Through consultation, educators will gain knowledge of intervention strategies, behavior plans, and resources which can be used to support student development and achievement in the classroom. School counselors will provide information and assistance to teachers during times of standardized testing. Educators will benefit from school counselor support and encouragement during parent and team meetings. Teachers, staff, and administrators will assist in the delivery of the school counseling program through their reinforcement of classroom lessons, dissemination of important program and event information to students and families, and collaboration with counselors to provide interventions to students. Teachers will be in‐serviced and be involved in the implementation of the career and education work standards.
Guardians
The guardians of Pottsgrove School District will benefit from frequent communication with the school counselors. Guardians will receive verbal, written, electronic, and in‐person communication, which maintains the confidentiality of the student and family. School counseling program websites will be updated regularly in order to provide immediate access to and information about programs, resources, and upcoming events related to students’ academic, career, and personal/social development. Guardians will be empowered to act as advocates for their children, while receive support and encouragement from the school counseling program. Guardians will assist in the delivery of the school counseling program through their active participation in team meetings, attendance at programs, and response to school interventions. Guardians can enhance student academic, career, and personal/social success by remaining knowledgeable about the information being taught at school, and reinforcing these ideas with their student. Guardians are also encouraged to share their career journeys during Career Exploration Units. Guardians have important insights about their children, which, when shared, will be a valuable tool in supporting students.
Business/Community
The Pottsgrove community will benefit from the partnerships formed with the school counseling program and school district. The school counseling program will offer opportunities for students to give back to the local community through volunteer and service projects. Local businesses will have the opportunity to provide learning experiences to our students through internships, job shadowing, and volunteer opportunities. Local businesses and agencies will have the opportunity to share their resources and knowledge through classroom presentations and events. The community will assist in the delivery and enhancement of the school counseling program by providing consultation to the families and students. Through the donation of goods, time, and resources, community agencies and organizations help the school counseling program continue to deliver equitable access for all students who may be in need.
Post‐Secondary
Postsecondary opportunities can be provided for students through dual enrollment and early admission programs. Post‐secondary institutions and organizations will benefit from the school counseling program’s invitations to present information and career path options to students. Through the school counseling program, students will become knowledgeable of their interests and abilities, which will aid them in selecting post‐secondary options. Post‐secondary institutions and organizations will assist in the delivery of the school counseling program through their participation in information sessions, workshops, and disseminating information to students and families.
