    Dear Parents:

    I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and have had a chance to relax and rejuvenate after such an unexpected spring. 

    I’d like to introduce myself to you as your child’s teacher for any life skills/functional academic classes.  I am a graduate of Pottsgrove High School and graduated from West Chester University with my Bachelors of Science in Special Education K-21.  I have been teaching at Pottsgrove for the last 20 years, with the last 6 years in the Life Skills classroom.  I have been married to my husband Jason for 20 years and we have 3 children in the Pottsgrove School District: my son Ethan will be a senior this year, my daughter Payton will be a junior and my youngest daughter Addisyn will be in 5th grade.

    This year I will be teaching functional language arts, functional math, functional reading and daily living/social skills.  Normally during our daily living skills class we practice job skills, hygiene, living skills (cooking, cleaning and community outings) along with social skills.  This packet includes permission for many of the activities that we will try to replicate online and once we return to the building for instruction.  We will try to do as many of these activities as possible, but my apologies that we will not be able to run the program as we normally do.  In the meantime, you and your child will receive emails from me about virtual outings or possible outings that you can take with your child that we would normally do as a class.  If you are unable to do this, or are uncomfortable with the proposed activity, your child’s grade will not be affected in any way.

    Now It’s time to start thinking about our new and unprecedented school year.  Please bear with all of your child’s teachers as we navigate this new way of teaching.  This is definitely the hardest thing we have ever done and we are all working as hard and as best as we can to simulate the real classroom on your child’s iPad.  My goal is to make this as easy as possible for your child (and you) to access their classes on Zoom.  So, my plan is to create one Zoom link that students can use for all life skills core classes for the entirety of our online learning.  This link will be used for any class they are scheduled to have with me and for my office hours.  All links will be posted on Schoology as well. 

    Along with myself, I have the following support staff members who may be in contact with you or your child to assist them with classwork, homework, provide additional instruction or pre-teach lesson content.

    The support staff will also have office hours every day from 2:15-2:45 and will be available all day each Wednesday (asynchronous learning days) to assist your child with anything they need help with. 

    I have included a couple sheets in this packet for you to read, complete, and return to me via email or send/drop it off at the middle school during their first week back.  I will also offer google forms that you can fill out instead (use the links below).  Please choose the format that works best for you!

    I know it seems like a lot, but I believe that students benefit the most when the parents and teachers are on the same page.  I value your opinions and knowledge about your child, and I want you to be up to date with what we are doing at school.  To keep you up to date, please join your child’s Schoology.

    Also, here is a supply list of items needed for your home/classroom for the year.  If you are able to donate any of these items once we return to the building it would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, having these items at home will allow your child to participate in activities relevant to our program. Students will use all of these materials to keep your home/ our classroom clean and healthy during our daily living skills class and/or during classroom activities.  This is beneficial to us all, especially now with Covid-19 precautions.

     As we enter this school year, please know how much myself and my support staff value your partnership and your support during our virtual learning format, but please note that there will be times when we need to work 1:1 with your child.  I am sure that with open communication and flexibility, we will make the best of this new kind of learning.
